Lava Falls, river mile 179, is one of the most challenging and thrilling rapids in the Grand Canyon. It is also always memorable as the last major rapid people experience on river trips through the Canyon. It is named for lave flows which have tumbled over the rim during the past 2 million years bringing the falls into existence. Geologists know that that at least once, approximately 1.6 million years ago, a lava flow completely plugged the canyon, damming the river and creating a reservoir which took decades to fill and that stretched all the way back to Moab, Utah.
Running rapids in the grand canyon has been life changing excursion for many an adventurous traveler since Powell brought back stories of the mighty river. though many of the chills and thrills melt into one overwhelming experience in the memories of most, Lava falls will usually stand out. The 13 foot drop is over in a matter of seconds, but once it is behind you, most are swept by the inescapable fact that the journey is coming to an end and what is true for all, is that the sights and sounds will remain in your heart for the rest of your life.
