Wow. Not much to say here. So much for safety when it comes to these revelers but they sure no how to throw a party on New Years Eve in Panama. Chitré is the place to be...

We showed up last minute to Chitré and got the room overlooking the plaza at the hotel Rex, so much for sleep. In Panama the families celebrate the New Year together so at midnight if there is a countdown it is in private, no ball dropping here.

Afterward, however, the people hit the streets and it is the first night that they begin to show the carnival floats and as you will see from the other video we have here it, is a throw down. It rivals New Orleans Mardi Gras. The celebration in neighboring Tablas is said to be the largest Carnival in the Americas, where they put everyone I will never know.

If you want to go have a great New Years Eve in a place like never before. Book the two front balcony rooms at the Hotel Rex so you can view the sites and see it all. Do not expect to get much sleep because the next day they have a party with huge water trucks that hose everyone down and that starts right after the other party ends.

This is the main square in Chitre and the Church that resides there. There are many beautiful churches throughout Panama, and this is another one.

Chitre is the capital of the Herrera province in Panama, a place rich in culture. The people in this part of Panama are nice, down to earth and very friendly, as throughout most of Panama. There are very few tourists here which adds to the true culture that this area has to offer.

Chitré is the capital of the Panamanian province Herrera. Chitré is located about 7 km inland from the Gulf of Panama on the Azuero Peninsula. In the city, there is a district, also called Chitré, which is subdivided into five corregimientos. The corregimientos are San Juan Bautista, Llano Bonito, Monagrillo, La Arena and Chitré.

The carnival celebrations in the city are well-known. They are some of the most famous in the country, and coincide with the celebrations of the Holy Week, Corpus Christi, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the city.
